The market in Bourne is held weekly under a charter granted to the Lord of the Manor, Baldwin Wake, by Edward I in 1279, to be held on a Saturday and this tradition continues to this day although a Thursday market was later added and this has become the most popular of the two. It was originally held on the streets with the stalls along the pavements in North Street and West Street but increasing traffic flows created hazards for shoppers and in 1990 it was moved to a purpose built site behind the Corn Exchange. The number of stallholders has declined in recent years and despite attempts by South Kesteven District Council to rejuvenate trade through the introduction of colourful canopies for the stalls, the number of shoppers continues to decline and there are now fears that it may soon end completely.
