SC3775 : Former Drill Hall - Peel Road
taken 9 years ago, near to Douglas, Isle of Man
Former Drill Hall - Peel Road
The drill hall was built in 1895 for the 7th (Isle of Man) Volunteer Battalion, King's (Liverpool Rifles). After the Haldane Reforms of 1908 that established the Territorial Force this was the only unit of Volunteers to remain unattached. At the outbreak of the Great War there were two companies charged with guarding the influx of enemy aliens.
It was also the base for the First Manx Service Company prior to their departure for training in Liverpool in March 1915. The company was eventually attached to the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment.
The hall remained in use by the Volunteers through the Second World War and by Sea Scouts in the post war period. It was used by the Isle of Man Government as the Wool Control Centre.
More recently it was sold to Glenville Ltd and operates as an architectural Salvage Centre. The interior of the building has many original features.
My thanks to Richard Melhuish for the pictures of the building after I spotted it on a recent episode of Salvage Hunters.
