Bass Castle, Bass Rock
The screen wall of Bass Castle end at the rock edge in a round battery, seen here. Gun ports cover the landing place. The battery is known as the Crane Bastion on plans from 1700. This castle is dated to the 16th century although an earlier 'Castell of the Bas' is mentioned in 1405. In 1902 the lighthouse built above it, on the site of the governor's house.

Ten percent of the world's gannet population nest on this volcanic plug in the Firth of Forth.
