Orangery, Rufford Abbey, Rufford, Notts.
Orangery, Rufford Abbey, Rufford, Notts.
Part of the Orangery with the Apsidal Gallery. The semi-circular south-east facing end of the structure is characteristically vaulted. It was originally built as a bath house and summer pavilion for Sir George Savile to a design of John Hallam in 1729. Sir John Savile inherited the estate in 1887. He was a career diplomat who became the British ambassador to Rome and the 1st Baron Savile in 1888. He converted the bath house into a glass-roofed Orangery to house exotic plants and his collection of antiquities and sculptures. A boiler house provided it with under-floor heating. The structure was restored and opened to the public in 1995.
