SU6565 : Drive over Brewery Common
taken 9 years ago, near to Mortimer, West Berkshire, England
A small area of registered common land, register unit CL25, straddling Brewery Common Lane and Nightingale Lane, about 3 hectares in extent. The common is a remnant of the former Mortimer Heath at Whites Corner, which was inclosed in the early C19. Brewery Common was allotted out of the inclosed lands as a public stone and gravel pit and, having been worked out, subsequently used as a rubbish tip (it is still regarded as contaminated land). It is now owned by the Stratfield Mortimer parish council, and subject to a scheme of regulation and management under Part I of the Commons Act 1899 made in 1927 by the former Bradfield Rural District Council, now West Berkshire Council. There is a public right of access to the common under the scheme.
