The perimeter fence at Robertson Barracks
This army base, named after Field Marshal Sir William Robertson, is currently the home of the Light Dragoons, originally a Light Cavalry Regiment. The Light Dragoons are scheduled to stay here until 2015.
Known as RAF Swanton Morley in WW2, it was an RAF aerodrome used by British and American Air Forces and formed part of Group 2 Bomber Command. In December 1944, the station was taken over by the Bomber Support Development Unit (BSDU) of No. 100 Group RAF which had its headquarters at nearby Bylaugh Hall.
After the war the base was used by the No. 1 Air Signaller's School and later by the Central Servicing Development Establishment (CSDE) and the Maintenance Analysis and Computing Establishment (MACE). The 611 Volunteer Gliding School was based here from the summer of 1953 until 1995, when the station was closed and subsequently converted for Army use.
