Detail on the Great Tower
Tattershall Castle tower was a masterpiece of early English brickwork. Over a million bricks and Ancaster limestone blocks were used to provide a comfortable living space over six stories as well as a defensive fortress. The parapets around the towers have a series of machicolations - overhanging channels down which missiles or boiling liquid could be directed at any attackers below. The smaller machicolations around the very top of the towers are, however, purely decorative.
