Revesby Park
Revesby Park
View northwards from the A155 to Revesby Abbey in the distance on the left and a large herd of fallow deer in the foreground. This view has changed little since Joseph Banks inherited the estate and considerable wealth from his father in 1761. A keen botanist, Banks financed and accompanied Captain James Cook on his epic round the world voyage between 1768 and 1771. He brought many species of plants back to the estate (some of which still stand in the park today). He also released kangaroos and Marino sheep into the park. He worked very closely with Dutch experts to improve agricultural land in the county. He advised King George III on the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and he was a keen advocate of British settlement in Australia. Around 80 species of plants bear his name.

Ravensby is still run as an estate today, renting land and buildings, selling estate produce and providing country activities.
