Larpool Viaduct
Larpool Viaduct
This photo shows Larpool Viaduct, on the River Esk, near Whitby. The photo was taken from the vantage point of a boat during a very high tide.
Construction of the 13 arch viaduct was started in 1882 and completed in 1884 ; an estimated 5 million bricks were used. The line was never very profitable and, after the Beeching Report, it was closed. The viaduct became a grade II listed structure in 1972. The viaduct has been reopened, together with much of the Scarborough to Whitby line, as a walking and cycling path.
