Fogbow near Barnearnie
Fogbow near Barnearnie
This fogbow appeared on a morning of patchy mist and sunshine.
A fogbow is formed in the same way as a rainbow, by light being reflected inside suspended water droplets. However the water droplets in mist or fog are much smaller than raindrops, too small to refract light and split it into the colours of the spectrum. Instead the light is diffracted and a much broader, paler bow is the result. This gives the fogbow one of its alternative names - the white rainbow.
