Gravestone of William Weare, St Peter's Church, Portesham
When William Weare died he was buried inside the wall of St Peter's Church, Portesham. No-one knows why really, but legend has it that, as a committed Royalist during the English Civil War and being on the losing side, losing all his property, he took his bitterness with him to the grave in allegedly expressing wishes to neither be buried inside or outside the church! His epitaph reads:
William Weare lies here in dust
As thou and I and all men must
Once plundered by Sabean force
Some cald it war but others worse
With confidence he pleads his cause
And Kings to be above those laws
September Eyhth Day died hee
When near the Date of 63
Ano Domini 1670
