SS4819 : Torridge Viaduct

near to Great Torrington, Devon, Great Britain

Torridge Viaduct
Torridge Viaduct
This viaduct carries the Tarka Trail over the River Torridge. It was built to carry the railway line from Torrington to Halwill Junction, more grandly known as the North Devon & Cornwall Junction Railway, even though it got nowhere near the latter county! The line did not open until 1926 and closed to passengers in 1965 (not that there were ever many of those) but the northern half of the line carried china clay trains until the early 1980s.
