SO9037 : Road construction earthmovers on Downfield Lane #2
taken 56 years ago, near to Twyning Green, Gloucestershire, England
In August 1967 work began on extending the M5 motorway south from junction 8, its junction with the M50, the 'Ross Spur'. This section of motorway crosses the River Avon and its floodplain and required the construction of an embankment. Most of the construction traffic accessed the site through the village of Twyning and along the narrow country road Downfield Lane, then only concession for motorway construction traffic were the construction of passing places. The contractor was Christiani Shand and among the largest vehicles were these large earthmovers which we called 'Scarpers'. Once the large embankment across the Avon floodplain was built it was left to settle and these earthmovers went up to Shap to construct the M6 motorway.
