Female Blackcap - Llantwit Major
Female Blackcap - Llantwit Major
Sometimes known as the Northern Nightingale, the Blackcap was known only as a summer visitor until the 1940's. In recent decades birds from Central Europe have been recorded as wintering in the UK. It is thought that this strategy is followed so that the males can return to breeding areas more quickly than those that migrate southward and can therefore claim the best territories on their return to their summer haunts. Birds from the UK population migrate to the south to winter in Iberia and North Africa though have been recorded as far east as Sardinia. This one was observed in a tangle of bare Hawthorn beside a busy town by-pass.
