The Cromford Canal Company was formed by an act of Parliament on 24th of August 1789. It cost £46,000 to cut the Canal and fill it with water.

The building of the canal was supported by Sir Richard Arkwright and other local businessmen and was engineered by William Jessop and Benjamin Outram although this was not without itís problems. The canal runs from Cromford in Derbyshire to a junction with the Erewash Canal at Langley Mill.
