TF6923 : Roydon All Saints church
taken 13 years ago, near to Roydon, Norfolk, England
Roydon All Saints church
Apart from the 14th c. tower most here is Victorian. The nave and chancel were completely rebuilt. The north and south Norman doorways with their zigzag decoration are original. The pseudo-Norman entrance to the porch is pleasing but looks out of place. Even the square font, although in the shape of a Norman example, is all Victorian. Whether such wholesale destruction was necessary or justifiable I cannot tell, but it has left a church with little of interest except to admirers of Victorian architecture. The matching arches of the piscina and sedilia are relatively plain to reflect what was here before. On the north side wall is a dark scorch-mark which is where the church was struck by lightning a few years ago. Obviously well cared for, but all the charm was removed by the Victorians.
