On the night of 20 December 1981, with hurricane force 12 winds and gusts of over 90 knots, and a sea of over 60 feet, the Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne was launched to go to the rescue of a bulk carrier Union Star which had reported engine failure near the Wolf Rock, eight miles off the coast.

Last contact from the Solomon Browne reported that four of the stricken ship's crew had been rescued, but then disaster overtook the lifeboat. It was smashed to pieces and all the brave crew were lost.
