Greystone Bridge
The downstream side of the grade I listed bridge, showing one of the "cutwaters which continue up to form refuges, corbelling out at the base of the parapet above the chamfered granite moulded string" LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) . According to "Medieval Science, Technology, and Medicine: An Encyclopedia" by Thomas F. Glick, cutwaters on the downstream side of bridges were "to reduce scouring by whirlpools".
