Balcombe Place
Balcombe Place
Built in 1856 for John Alexander Hankey, then High Sheriff of Sussex. The building was acquired by the Cowdray estate in 1905 for Viscount Cowdray's daughter who became Lady Denman on her marriage to Baron Denman. The Denmans resided here until at least the Second World War when it became the local headquarters of the Women's Land Army. When the Denmans died in the mid 1950s the Cowdray Estate leased the building out as school, first becoming a Roman Catholic prep school in 1955 which later merged with another called Bishop Sutton in 1969 which stayed here until 1976. An attempt to demolish it led to its listed status in 1977 after which it became a country hotel with conference facilities and then from the late 1980s a care home, which it remains today.
