Mennock Earthen Cross
The OS map shows an “Earthen Cross” next to the sheepfold in the Holmes of Mennock. On a previous visit, I could find no trace of anything old resembling the description and I wasn’t even really sure of what I was looking for. I considered the possibility that old stones had been used to construct the sheepfold but also that something might be visible from above. On my mid-April return visit, I climbed the slope and did find a large cross shape on the ground, easy to miss and difficult to capture in a photo being only 30-40cm high. Later I found confirmation of my observation in the website

which I hadn’t found after my previous visit. It was rewarding to have worked it out for myself. The arms of the cross lie parallel to the road, with the shorter head pointing towards the river and the longer tail pointing to the bottom left corner of this photo.
