Huntington Castle

Huntington Castle is a Norman site with masonry dating from 13th century. Since 1535, when Henry VIII settled the border of England and Wales, the site of the castle has been in England, previously the border had fluctuated, with it sometimes being on the Welsh side of the border in the middle ages. During the reign of King Henry III the castle belonged to William de Brose, Lord of Brecknock, after his death it passed to his wife and then to her daughter who married Humphrey de Bohun, son of the Earl of Hereford. Humphrey supported Simon de Montford, while his father supported Henry III. Simon de Montford was killed at the Battle of Evesham in 1265, and Humphrey de Bohun was captured and then imprisoned in Beeston Castle in Cheshire where he died. His family held on to Huntington Castle. His descendant the 4th Earl of Hereford married Princess Elizabeth, daughter of Edward I in 1302 (Elizabeth’s first husband was John I, Count of Holland). The 4th earl was killed at the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322 during the unsettled times during the reign of Edward II. Through marriage the castle came into the possession of Henry IV who granted it to the Duke of Buckingham who died fighting for the king at the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403.

Through the following centuries the castle fell into a ruinous state and by the time of the English Civil War the mid-17th century was of no use defensively. Since then the site’s ownership has passed through a number of owners. It is now owned by a local farming family who have cleared the site of undergrowth.
