Archive Link ) "it was built to replace a white wooden post box, which in the 1870s startled a horse that threw its rider. The Earl of Arran paid stonemason David Wilson, from Shiskine, to build one that wouldn’t spook the horses but the budget was so lavish he felt obliged to make it fancy and adorned it with oversized masons’ marks."
