SD9822 : The Two Lads, Sowerby

taken 9 years ago, 3 km from Cragg Vale, Calderdale, England

The Two Lads, Sowerby
The Two Lads, Sowerby
These are cairns of unknown age on boulders. The western boulder has a cup and ring carving and a cross base under the cairn (which must have been dismantled and rebuilt). See SD9822 : Inscription on the boulder supporting the western of the Two Lads cairns, Sowerby.
Territory formerly in Sowerby

A large area of Moorland north of Withens Clough and west of Cragg Vale is shown on the 1850 six-inch map as being in Sowerby. It includes the divisions of 'The Withens' and 'Turley Holes Moss', although why areas of moorland were designated as divisions of a township is a mystery. In the local government reorganisation of 1893 the area was given to Mytholmroyd, which later became part of Hebden Royd Council.
