East side of Coventry Cathedral
Coventry Cathedral, also known as St Michael's Cathedral, was built next to the remains of the old cathedral which was bombed almost to destruction by the Luftwaffe during the Coventry Blitz (November 14th 1940).
It was designed by Basil Spence, who rejected the suggestion of rebuilding the old cathedral. He insisted that it should be kept in ruins as a Garden of Remembrance and that the new cathedral should be built alongside it.
The foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid by Queen Elizabeth II in March 1956. The cathedral was consecrated on May 25th 1962.
The building was Grade I listed (the highest category) in 1988.
