NZ0949 : Hown's Gill Viaduct Prior to 1856 rail wagons between Consett and Rowley had to cross Hown's Gill by a tedious system of inclined tracks. In that year a brick 12-arch viaduct some 150' above the gorge floor was built. This became redundant as a rail crossing after Beeching (1968) and now forms part of a national cycle track.
