SO2856 : Hergest Mill - unusual bedstone

Hergest Mill - unusual bedstone
Hergest Mill - unusual bedstone
This is one of four French burr bedstones in this former watermill. However, it is the only one with this pattern of lands and grooves. It has been reused from a mill with the opposite direction of rotation and has been recut to accommodate the opposite direction. This must be pretty unusual if not unique. The two circular object at 1 and 7 o'clock are adjustable balance weights that would have been used in the runner stone. The bridge piece above the stone is in the end of the quant and would have carried the runner stone.
