TQ3978 : Greenwich Square, nearly ready (1)
taken 9 years ago, near to Greenwich, England
A large development on the site of the former Greenwich District Hospital which was demolished in 2006. The site lay vacant for several years but was developed from 2013 onwards.
Initially it was to have been called "Heart of East Greenwich" which would have been geographically accurate, but during construction of phase 1 the name was changed to "Greenwich Square" to sound as if it was closer to the town centre (a more "desirable" location).
Phase 1 opened in 2015, consisting of several apartment blocks, maisonettes and the Greenwich Centre (public facilities such as leisure centre, library and medical centre). Phase 2 consisting of further apartments and more expensive town houses would come later. The whole development was intended by Make Architects to be "silver standard" for sustainability.
The partners in the development were Hadley Property Group, London & Quadrant (housing association), Mace Construction, the local NHS trust, and the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
