Built c 1871. In addition to the extant two arched and pilastered floors, the building originally had a large ornamental gable on the corner and smaller dormers on the flanks, all linked by a stone balustrade. Unfortunately, the owner of the building failed to repair the dormers and balustrade as they decayed, and has replaced them by four inappropriate modern dormers (two are visible in the photo; the others face onto Bigg Market). The building is not listed.
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
