NS4277 : Possible former site of a building

Possible former site of a building
Possible former site of a building
A square area of shorter vegetation near the centre of the picture is, just possibly, a faint sign of the former presence of a structure. Click on the end-note title for related pictures.

In the present picture, the ground dips out of sight in the middle distance, along the course of the Garshake Burn. Beyond that is a small area of woodland called Square Wood; an old road to Drymen, skirted the near side of that wood. That route is marked on the annotated satellite view linked from the end-note. A similar old road passed just east of the site shown in the present picture; that route is also marked on the satellite map.
Remains of a cultivated plot
The remains of a cultivated plot, with ridges spaced 1.5 metres apart, can be seen here. The plot measures 75 metres (SW-NW) by 45 metres (ESE-WNW, the orientation of the ridges); only the SW half is easily seen on the ground. Such a plot would normally be found next to a farmhouse, but there are no definite remains of buildings to be seen on the ground here, only small rectilinear areas of shorter vegetation near the north-western edge of the cultivated plot; these could be a faint indication of the former presence of structures. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view centred on these remains, and LinkExternal link for a Geograph article discussing them in a wider context.
