TL3921 : The Lordship, Standon
taken 9 years ago, near to Latchford, Hertfordshire, England
The Lordship, Standon
The original house was built between 1540 and 1546 for Sir Ralph Sadlier (sometimes spelt Sadler and Sadleir) and elements of this are incorporated into the present structure which was extended around 1872 for, the second Duke of Wellington.
Sadlier was born in Hackney and at the age of 7 was sent to be educated at the house of Thomas Cromwell. He was a favourite of Cromwell and advanced quickly. He became Principal Secretary to Henry VIII and a member of the Privy Council. Upon Cromwell’s downfall and execution he was arrested and spent a short time in the Tower. However he survived the blood-letting of this time and continued his political career. He was one of the Regents to the child-king Edward VI and later found favour with Elizabeth I (who is said to have stayed at Standon Lordship on three separate occasions). He is interred inside the church at Standon 1 mile away (see
Link ) and is commemorated there with a large tomb and monument.
