It used to look like this NZ2464 : Haymarket Metro Station (photographed by MSX). A wider view is shown in NZ2464 : The Haymarket Hub, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (photographed by Malc McDonald).

For info about the metro station and its £ squillion rebuild, see the Wiki entry LinkExternal link .

Nexus, the Passenger Transport Executive for Tyne and Wear that owns and operates the Tyne and Wear Metro, said that

“The Haymarket Hub will rejunvenate [sic] this historical northern gateway into Newcastle City Centre. The exciting design ... will give rise to new leisure, commercial and retail opportunities and re-emphasise this area's importance to the city centre of Newcastle. (It) is to provide a logical defined boundary to the northern aspect of the City, something which currently, does not exist due to the present structure's single purpose function and its low rise design. Standing proud amongst but not overshadowing the current landmarks of the area; St Thomas The Martyr Church and the 'Angel' Monument the Hub will bring renewed vitality to this important part of the City” LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) . [I suppose that if you’re going to promulgate this sort of drivel, the grammar, spelling and punctuation don’t really matter that much.]

The Hub is indeed worthy of inclusion in the canon of Newcastle's Masterpieces of Modern Architecture Link . It was shortlisted for the 2010 Carbuncle Cup*, but that year’s worthy winner was “Strata” LinkExternal link . See also NZ2464 : The aliens have landed (photographed by Andrew Curtis).

There’s another “hub” here NZ2464 : The Pearl, Northumberland Street / New Bridge Street, NE1.

* The Carbuncle Cup is an architecture prize, given annually by the magazine Building Design to "the ugliest building in the United Kingdom completed in the last 12 months" LinkExternal link .
