Foilhomurrin Bay is the site of the first permanent communications link between Europe and America. A memorial on this site states:

'In 1865/6 the first permanent communications link between Europe and America was initiated here with the landing of the transatlantic telegraph cable. Four more cables from Telegraph Field opposite this site were laid between Foilhammerum Bay, Valentia Is. and Heart's Content, New Foundland, with connecting cables to Penzance, Cornwall and Emden, Germany.'

See LinkExternal link LinkExternal link & LinkExternal link for contemporary accounts of the cable landing in Ireland in 1865 & the North American end of the cable being finally lost in 1866 from 'The Illustrated London News'.

The view includes the south side of the bay, the western end of the Iveragh Peninsula with its many islets, and the Skelligs in the distance (right)
