The 13000 acre Wallington estate comprised a magnificent Palladian style mansion, set in rolling countryside into which blended its own farms. It came into being at the hands of the Fenwick family in 1475 and having passed through several owners and reconstructions, it eventually came to the Trevelyon family in 1777, the last of which was the socialist MP Sir Charles Trevelyon who gave it to the National Trust in 1942. The gatehouse pictured gives entry to a large square green, with mature trees forming a pleasant framework through which to view the main house directly ahead.
