SE3467 : Statue at Newby Hall

taken 9 years ago, near to Skelton on Ure, North Yorkshire, England

Statue at Newby Hall
Statue at Newby Hall
A much travelled statue set on a grass roundabout in front of Newby Hall.

It depicts John Sobieski, King of Poland trampling on a Turk. It was altered to represent Charles II and Oliver Cromwell and placed in the Stocks Market in London. When the market was demolished to make way for the Mansion House, it was placed in the yard of an inn. It then made its way to Gaudby in Lincolnshire, and then finally erected on this spot - now well over 300 years old.
