Pier Head (Purbeck Arts Week)
There have been repeated attempts to develop Swanage's Pier Head in the past twenty years, but despite more than a dozen proposals from five different architects planning permission has been refused every time. Purbeck artists Antonia Phillips and Nina Camplin painted the 3D mural, which appears to show a huge hole in the side of the derelict building. The idea was to raise awareness about the plight of the building with a vision of how it could look should its deterioration be allowed to continue. "We wanted to help kick-start the redevelopment project," Nina said. "Every time plans are submitted they are rejected and the building is getting quite unsafe. It seems as if it will be left to rot." The building was built by Canadian troops stationed in Swanage at the end of the Second World War as a temporary mess hall while they waited to be demobilised.
