The site of the former Church of St Swithin, Asgarby
The scant remains of the church and the tombs in the churchyard have been opened up by the dedication of someone who cares. Trees have been cut back and vegetation reduced, which wouldn't have been easy on this uneven site. The site is reached by a footpath on both sides of the churchyard.
Churchgoers would have been able to look south and see the towering church of St Botolph or ‘The Stump’ as it is also known. No date as to when the church of St Swithin was built but burial records for it were started in 1813. It was restored in 1882 and seated about 40. I have it that the church became redundant on 18-Dec-1985 and was demolished on 08-Jul-1986. However, in the 1965 'A Shell Guide to Lincolnshire', by Jack Yates & Henry Thorold, it says that it was about to be pulled down then.
