Abandoned Railway
Abandoned Railway
A section of the proposed Ouse Valley Railway that was started in 1866 and never completed. If I've understood the plans correctly then this part would have actually been a small tunnel that would have exited to the east of High Beech Lane then travelled through a cutting past Kenwards Farm.

The proposed line would have run from the London-Brighton mainline south of the Balcombe Viaduct to Uckfield, then a terminus of a line from Lewes, then on to Hailsham, also a terminus of a branch from Polegate, before heading off to its eventual destination, St Leonards. The line was more an attempt by the LBSCR to prevent other railway companies muscling into their area and was never expected to be profitable. The collapse of a banking house specialising in funding the building of railways led to work being stopped in early 1867 and was never restarted. All that remains of this phantom line are earthworks stretching from the mainline to Lindfield with further workings west of Uckfield (See TQ4520 : Abandoned Railway).
