Also known as the broad bean this is one of the oldest cultivated crops in the UK, dating as far back as the iron age. It was a crucial part of the British diet for centuries, but in more recent times has become stigmatised as a food of the poor and fell out of fashion, and modern strains are in fact no longer fit for human consumption. The seeds of certain varieties are an important livestock feed.
