SD1988 : Duddon Iron Furnace
taken 9 years ago, near to Duddon Bridge, Cumbria, England
Duddon Iron Furnace
This is one of the best places in the UK to see a pre mass industrialisation country iron furnace. Local iron ore (in this case hematite from West Cumbria) was smelted with charcoal and a little limestone (deposits nearby) to produce pig iron (ingots of rough iron).
This product was then shipped for further processing.
