High Wycombe: The original Brunel railway station
High Wycombe: The original Brunel railway station
This building has had a long and complex history, being originally constructed in 1854 as the terminus station, to the designs of Brunel or more likely one of his assistants, of the Wycombe Railway's line from Maidenhead. When the line was extended to Thame in 1864 the location of the station was not suitable for the extension of the railway's alignment further, so a new station, occupied by the current version, was built some 100 metres to the north-east, and the original station here became a goods shed. Numerous additions and alterations were made to it, including a westwards extension which has since been removed to reveal this, the original building fašade. The building became Grade II Listed in 1999 as it is one of the only six remaining Great Western Railway trainsheds. The mural with the girl at the side is quite lifelike, apart from the fact that your photographer was sure he saw a plate inscribed "British Railways" on the smokebox of the locomotive...
