This rural square was once the home of two beer houses and a ferry crossing.
The Jolly Banker's beer house was on the western bank of the washes next to Jolly Banker’s Bridge. This bank was probably an important track between Earith and Sutton Gault and old maps also show a toll house on the bank. Many of the former drove roads leading off into the fens connect to this bank.
On the eastern bank where the road (B1381) leaves the bank and becomes Chain Causeway stood another beer house called Sutton Chain. Although not named on current maps this corner is still known locally as Chain Corner. See this old
