East front, Basildon House
Basildon House was built in the 1770s for Sir Francis Sykes who had made his fortune in the India and the East India Company. Since then it has had a chequered history and in the late 1920s was bought by a property speculator who tried to sell it and have it rebuilt in the United States, fortunately the Great Depression put an end to this plan. The house was saved by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. Today the house and park are in the care of the National Trust.
