View of the Wye from Lover's Leap
"A Guide to the Stranger Visiting the Town of Chepstow...", published in 1827, has this to say: "Lover's Leap, so called from the Leucadian Promontory [LinkExternal link] whence despairing Lovers (and among them Sappho) precipitated themselves. It is the edge of a perpendicular cliff, overlooking a tremendous abyss, clothed with underwood, which at the bottom looks as fine as a spider's web, and is usually enveloped in mist. This spot is inclosed with iron rails and you look instantaneously down one hundred and eighty feet! - a tremendous and sublime picture".

One wonders if the iron railings seen in the photograph are the same ones mentioned in 1827!
