Berry Pomeroy Castle

The castle was built in the late 15th century by the Pomeroy family, replacing their unfortified manor house in the village. It stands on a limestone outcrop overlooking the Gatcombe Brook valley on three sides and a gatehouse defensive range to the east. The castle was sold to Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset in 1547 whose successors built the Tudor mansion within the late medieval walls and it remained with the Seymour family until abandoned in the late 17th century.
It is a grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of English Heritage. LinkExternal link
