Greenfinch and parasitic tick
Greenfinch and parasitic tick
Parasites, such as this tick, are not uncommon on wild birds. Ticks are more often than not found on species such as Robin, Blackbird and Dunnock that spend a great deal of time foraging on the ground. Those species utilising old nests, House Martin, Swallow and Swift in particular are also prone to carry flat flies. All such parasites have a debilitating affect upon birds, often resulting in the death of their hosts. Wildlife is not without its problems and ugliness despite our oft worn rose tinted spectacles!
