The remains of buildings can be seen on the top of this sheer sided rock off the coast of Co Clare. They are the remains of a 6th century monastic settlement founded, it is thought, by St Senan, and include an oratory, a clochan [beehive hut] as well as 3 or 4 other structures. If like me, you are wondering how St Senan managed to get to this island without the aid of helicopter, parachute or climbing gear, it would appear that this was once attached to the mainland and has become an island in the last thousand years.
