"Speed" on Allt a'Chaorainn
One of the "Etive tribs", the Allt a'Chaorainn offers steep creeking as it should be, with a gradient of 80m/km. The first drop on the run is known by paddlers as "Speed" since that is precisely what it generates. Paddled at this water level (or even lower), there is enough water to lubricate the polished granite slide which levels out towards the bottom, shooting the paddler towards the vertical rock wall above which the photographer is standing. It takes a certain amount of effort (and skill) to turn the boat to avoid being pressed up against the rock, where the current has a strong tendency to cause a capsize. The pool is deep and calm, so there is no real hazard here, as long as the paddle is held safely so as not to be ripped from your hands during the descent ! Mary Waddington is just coming to the point of peak speed where the slide starts to kick outwards and give the boat some "airtime".
