"Pinball" on Allt a'Chaorainn
One of the "Etive tribs", the Allt a'Chaorainn offers steep creeking as it should be, with a gradient of 80m/km. "Pinball" is the third of four drops, shorter than "Ecstasy" and not as steep as either "Speed" or "Chasm". "Ecstasy" probably needs more skill to run neatly, but by contrast, "Pinball" needs a certain degree of luck. As the name implies, your course down the slide is determined by the exact point of entry and the way one bounces off the various bits of granite that are encountered at increasing speed during the descent. In particular, the normal line avoids the lump of rock seen behind Giles Trussel in his descent, by bouncing right, where one is then carried by fast water into the big cushion wave with some risk of smacking in to the rock wall above, which overhangs somewhat at head height. In very low water, the speed doesn't get up too much, and in very high water, the cushion wave gets bigger (and a line down river left becomes possible right from the top), but at this level the risk seemed unjustifiably high for our group, so we launched from a shelf river left, running just the bottom half, to reach the small boof drop as seen here. Immediately left of this photo is the run in to "Chasm", so it is not a good place to find yourself swimming...
