Running the crux rapid on the Upper Tummel
Running the crux rapid on the Upper Tummel
Whilst runnable all summer on the compensation flow from the Dunalstair dam, the Upper Tummel really comes alive when the dam is releasing after heavy rainfall, or periodically to flush the river in the summer. After a long dry spell, the dam was still on its summer release schedule, and we think this release was a bit lower than is normal, either because the dam was not very full, or because we were only an hour from the end of the (48-hour) release and the level was already ramping down.

The main rapid, which is the only bit of grade 4 on this section the river, seems to vary quite a bit with level, and only Giles Trussel (of Glenmore Lodge) had the courage to run it on this particular trip. With more water, a line further left seems to open up. The portage river right was easier than it first appeared, to a rocky put-in to an eddy where a paddler with a green helmet is just visible (you might need a bigger version of the photo than the 640-pixel one to see her).
