NY1812 : Barnard's Cairn

Barnard's Cairn
Barnard's Cairn
One of Ennerdale's secrets. This cairn is unmapped and has been hidden by forest for eighty years. The cairn is situated on the southern slope below and slightly east of Proud Knott. Although the forest has now been cleared the cairn is not easy to find or get to through the rubbish left by the forestry operations. There are two plaques. One reads "The body of Edward Barnard of Angel St. & Highbury Grove, London who was lost was lost in this district Aug. 14th. was found on this spot Sept. 10th 1876."
And the other "The builders of this cairn request that visitors will respect its purpose and not mark it with initials Oct 1876".
